A/Prof. Bing Yu

Associate Professor Bing Yu MD PhD FFSc (RCPA) FHGSA

Department of Medical Genomics, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital,

Sydney Medical School (Central), the University of Sydney

Associate Professor Bing Yu completed his 6-year medical program in Shanghai Medical University in 1986 and followed by a 5-year medical doctoral program in Hua Shan Hospital, Shanghai Medical University. He was awarded PhD in Molecular Genetics at the University of Sydney in 1999. Currently he is a molecular geneticist in the Department of Medical Genomics, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Dr Yu attained the Fellowship from the Human Genetics Society of Australasia in 2008 and was awarded as a founding fellow of the Faculty of Science, Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in March 2011 in recognition of his contribution in molecular pathology.

Associate Professor Yu’s research focuses on the identification of genes involved in gene-environment interaction in complex disease. By the application of a novelin silico approach and the state-of-the-art DNA technologies, he and the associated research groups have identified EPAS1as a critical performance gene in elite endurance athletes; and several susceptible genes in motor neuron disease including MTF,MT1E and PON1 for toxicant sensing and detoxification. He published 81 peer-reviewed papers and edited one book “In silico tools for gene discovery”. Dr Yu received the Qilu Award for his collaborative research in translational medicine with Jinan Central Hospital from Shandong Provincial Government, China and is a 2010 recipient of Endeavour Executive Award from the Australia Federal Government.
